Property Modeling:

 

The challenge for property modeling is to generate a realistic impression of matrix properties at inter-well locations. Necessary 3D petrophysical properties for the dynamic simulation are rock type, porosity, permeability and saturation. These properties are commonly generated by integrating multi-scaled, multidimensional data from different disciplines having different resolutions. Geostatistical methodologies by using seismic derived-properties, well-logs, well tests, core data provides consistent results with the underlying geology of the field and input data.

There are different 3D property modeling approaches and methodologies currently utilized in oil & gas industry. Typical basic workflow:

 

After establishing large-scale geologic structure by deterministic interpolation of formation (clinoform, sub-zone, flow units); within each distinct sub-units, use SIS or some other discrete simulation technique (such as object-based simulation) to generate realizations of the facies distribution – the primary control on the porosity & permeability distribution.

Then within each facies, use SGS (or similar geostatistical algorithm) to generate porosity distribution and then simulate permeability conditional to porosity distribution, to honor the relation between the these two properties.
